"Jorginho is a midfielder with intelligence, deep leadership qualities and extensive Premier League and international experience," manager Mikel Arteta said on the club's official website.

"Jorginho has won in his career but he still has the hunger and the great will to contribute here.

"We are delighted to have signed Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club."

The club had been considering a deal for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, but in the final days of the transfer window they signed Jorginho, 31.

Arsenal sporting director Edu added: "Jorginho is a mature professional with a strong mentality and he brings quality and experience to our squad.

"He's a player who fits our style of play, he's come at the right time and he can be key in helping us keep our momentum going. We welcome Jorginho to Arsenal."

Jorginho joined Chelsea in July 2018 and has made 213 appearances. He played a key role in winning the 2019 Europa League and the 2021 Champions League.

He also helped Italy to Euro 2020 and was named UEFA Player of the Year later that summer, finishing third in the 2021 Ballon d'Or selection.

The midfielder has also played for Napoli, Verona, Sassuolo and AC Sambonifacese.
